The Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley: DOING ITS PART

As Earth Day celebrations get underway, it’s also important to note that The Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley and its owner, Centennial, have been responsible stewards of the environment in the Aurora/Naperville area. In addition to using sustainable building practices as the shopping center undergoes a transformation into a mixed-use destination featuring additional retail and dining options as well as luxury apartment housing, the center has also kept a sharp eye on sustainability practices year round. Some of the ways The Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley has safeguarded the environment over the past year include:

  • Employing sustainable business practices to recycle 93% (31,803 tons) of the center’s demolition-related waste – including steel, concrete and brick – that otherwise would have gone to landfills.
  • Recycling 96 tons of cardboard, the equivalent of saving 1,636 mature trees, 57,726 kilowatt hours of energy use, and 38,484 gallons of oil all during calendar year 2020.
  • Diverting 234 tons of waste from landfills, 27% of the trash generated by the shopping center in 2020.
  • Decreasing the center’s annual electrical consumption year over year in 2020 vs. 2019 by 20.5% (2.6 million kilowatts), the equivalent of powering 217 U.S. households for an entire year.
  • Providing 28,088 clean driving miles through the center’s two Volta charging stations.
  • Reducing its carbon footprint by 33% (3,671 MTCO2E) since 2015, when Centennial acquired the center, an amount which equates to the annual emissions from 380 vehicles.
  • The public can learn more about The Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley’s sustainability efforts through its SEE Centennial initiative, a program built on the three cornerstones of Sustainability, Efficiency and the Environment. At The Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley, environmental stewardship is an important part of creating a sustainable future and another way the center supports its commitment to the communities of Aurora and Naperville on Earth Day and every day in between.
